April 12th, 2011 marked the 150th Anniversary of the start of the War Between the States. This area of Virginia became the starting point of the military campaign that would eventually end the conflict. We offer you an opportunity to gain insights into those turbulent times in our nation's history with 3 fantastic guided Civil War Tours, luxurious accommodations, and superior dining along with our personal attention and the usual Inn at Westwood Farm pampering.

Your experience begins on Sunday evening when you will learn about the Civil War history in the immediate surroundings of the Inn at Westwood Farm while you enjoy appetizers, local Virginia wine and a casual dinner.

On Monday, after a full breakfast, you'll start with a walking tour of the Historic Town of Culpeper, VA guided by Virginia Morton, local historian and acclaimed author of the Civil War novel, "Marching through Culpeper." On this tour, you will learn about "Extra Billy" Smith, two-time governor of Virginia, and the oldest general in either army; General J.E.B. Stuart, the gallant Major John Pelham and their good friend Judge Henry Schackleford. Also on the tour route is a stop at the Culpeper County Court House, the boyhood home of General Ambrose Powell (A.P.) Hill, and many other exciting and historic points of interest. If you are not familiar with all the names above, you will in a short time. Following the tour you don't want to miss visiting the exceptional shops, antique stores and restaurants. There is time for you to visit some of the local wineries with your free tasting passes or explore one of a number of the 160 Civil War skirmish sites in and around Culpeper during the Civil War. You'll be greeted back at the Inn with wine and appetizers.

After breakfast on Tuesday you are off on a day long Civil War tour with a professional guide from Tourguide, LTD (www.tourguideltd.com). With your fully stocked Picnic Lunch Basket prepared in the Inn's kitchen, you will visit sites such as:

Madison County Tour

This is an incredible touring experience with a gifted historian who will guide you to the lesser known battle sites of the war and provide insights into the life of a soldier. You will be provided luxury accommodations, fine dining and pampering.

Madison and Greene Counties were focal points for critical events during the War Between the States. Inn at Westwood Farm offers you the opportunity to learn about the role of Madison and Greene Counties in the Civil War and enjoy one of the finest Bed and Breakfasts in Virginia.

When you arrive at Inn at Westwood Farm you will be treated to appetizers and local Virginia Wine and then enjoy a casual dinner.

On Wednesday and Thursday you will be guided by Harold Woodward, renowned Madison County Historian and Author of "For Home and Honor", who will take you on a 5-6 hour guided tour that will cover the events and landmarks leading up to, during and following the Battles of Jack's Shop and James City. Mr. Woodward has described the Battle of Jack's Shop as "the largest Civil War battle never recorded" even though it involved tens of thousands cavalry horses that covered the terrain for miles.
